During the first six months after gastric bypass surgery, 75 percent of obese patients with type 2 diabetes achieved diabetes remission. Sounds too good to be true?
Well a recent study reported that the effects of gastric bypass surgery Roux-en-Y (RYGB) helped patients with type 2 diabetes achieve diabetes remission and shed weight effectively. By 12 months post-surgery, that remission rate rose to 74 percent and persisted for the first five years after the procedure.
Gastric bypass surgery is one of the most effective therapies to treat or reverse type 2 diabetes in severely obese patients. Many achieve remission of diabetes following surgery and no longer require diabetes medications.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is one of many weight loss surgery procedures. This procedure reduces the size of the stomach by dividing the top of the stomach from the rest of the stomach, with the first section of the small intestines divided, shortened too, and reconnected to the smaller pouch of the stomach.
The recovery time span is short and patients will experience less scarring with this laparoscopic surgery (though not advised for every patient) than traditional open surgery.
First off, weight loss starts improving insulin sensitivity and cuts down insulin resistance. That study observed that over 65% of the participants achieved diabetes remission during the first six month after the surgery. That rate continued to rise after that period and crossed over 75%!
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery offers several potential benefits. Most roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients can expect to lose upto 95% of their excess weight with the surgery. However, long-term maintenance of your weight loss will depend on the follow-up with your bariatric surgeon, and on your adherence to a healthy diet and exercise regimen.
