According to a  2013-2014 census, around 63.4 percent of adults in Australia are overweight or obese, and the number is growing every day. On the surface, obesity limits physical activities, career options, personal relationships, and confidence, however, beneath the surface, it may lead to far more serious problems including various life-threatening diseases and conditions. Bariatric surgery can reduce the potential risks of obesity-related diseases and help patients lead healthy lives. In this two-part series, we discuss a few medical conditions that improve post bariatric surgery.

Let’s delve into Bariatric Surgery: A Head Start To Being Healthy – Part 1.

Heart Disease

Most obese people have high cholesterol levels in the arteries, which subsequently increases blood pressure and the risk of developing heart diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Losing at least five to ten percent of your body weight can reduce the risk of developing heart diseases. In 82 percent of patients struggling with obesity, the risk of developing cardiovascular disease was reduced post bariatric surgery.

Type-2 Diabetes

Obesity is one of the reasons behind type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes patients are at a further risk of developing problems such as kidney malfunction, eye diseases, bladder issues, and erectile dysfunction. To avoid such problems, get adequate sleep, cut off sugar, and exercise regularly, however, for patients with morbid obesity, all this may not be enough. Patients with severe obesity or type 2 diabetes can benefit from bariatric surgery as 83 percent of patients had their type 2 diabetes brought under control post bariatric surgery.

Osteoarthritis

Excess weight puts extra pressure on the bone structure, especially the spine, feet, knee joints, and hip girdle. Prolonged stress on the joints causes wear and tear of the joints and cartilage, which makes the bones susceptible to various bone degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis. Arthritis patients should keep a healthy BMI to reduce stress on the joints. If the condition is severe, patients may undergo bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery removes the excess weight, reducing stress on the joints. Post bariatric surgery, 41 to 76 percent of patients had resolution of their orthopedic and other degenerative joint symptoms.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Overweight women are most likely fall into the vicious circle of PCOS. PCOS patients are further at risk of developing serious diseases such as type II diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, and even endometrial cancer. Untreated, PCOS may also cause infertility. Although prescription medicines may be effective in resolving the issue, bariatric surgery in obese patients is the way forward. Menstrual dysfunction was resolved in 100 percent of the patients post bariatric surgery.
